New Mexico Governor Surrenders Abortion Issues: No Legislation in 2020

Congratulations Pro-Life
No Abortion Legislation in 2020!

Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has surrendered the abortion issue –  no abortion legislation in the 2020 Session.  Last January, eight Democrats voted with Republicans against the Governor’s effort at making New Mexico the no-restrictions abortion state.  Senate Majority Leader Peter Wirth (D-Santa Fe) admitted “We simply do not have the votes.”

The follow-up issue is the Governor’s determination to remove all eight of the brave Democrat Senators who voted against her.  Each of those Democratic Senators is expected to face challengers in Democratic primary election next June.

The most interesting of the all the primary challenges is that of Senator John Arthur Smith, arguably the most powerful man in the legislature, behind only the leadership.  Senator Smith has served since 1989 and is the third longest serving Senator in New Mexico.

The Senators who voted against the Abortion agenda were:  Pete Campos – Las Vegas, Carlos Cisneros – Las Cruces, Richard Martinez – Espanola, George Munoz – Gallup, Mary Kay Papen – Albuquerque (President Pro-Tem of the Senate), Gabriel Ramos – Silver City, Clemente Sanchez – Grants, John Arthur Smith – Deming.

Thanks to the following organizations that impacted the Senate with events and lobbying:

Bishop of New Mexico, Abortion Free New Mexico, Alliance for Life, Family Policy Alliance, Hispanic Alliance Network, New Mexico Prays, Patients’ Rights Action Fund, Saint Anne Church – Santa Fe, Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church Santa Fe

Congratulations to the Pro-Life Community!  May the Lord continue to bless you.
