Death of the Christian Worldview in New Mexico:  Pending State Law Mandates Support Homosexuality – or Lose Your License

A young Senator, Jacob Candelaria, is an openly homosexual New Mexico Senator.  He does not come from a homosexual enclave but instead was elected by Albuquerque’s South Valley.  Senator Candelaria has been given such accolades that his freshman year he was made Chair of the Democratic caucus and has remained in that position through this, his fourth year in the Senate.

In sponsoring Senate Bill 121:  No Conversion Therapy, Candelaria has put in place a homosexual ideology that disallows any Christian reference to homosexuality as sin.

SB 121:  No Conversion Therapy states:
[C]onversion therapy” means any practice or treatment that seeks to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity, including any effort to change behaviors or gender expressions or to eliminate or reduce sexual or romantic attractions or feelings toward persons of the same sex.

Conversion therapy” does not mean: counseling or mental health services that provide acceptance, support and understanding of a person without seeking to change gender identity or sexual orientation;  (This would then be required.)

SB 121 has passed both the House and Senate.  It now requires only Governor Martinez’s signature to become law.  Suggesting to a minor that homosexuality is not the will of God becomes grounds for loss of professional licenses and any resulting lawsuits.  A Christian worldview becomes the basis for disciplinary action by licensing boards.

Senator Candelaria repeatedly stated that clergy are exempt from the law but nowhere is that stated in SB 121.  Christian counselors that adhere to a biblical view of homosexuality would have to immediately cease and desist.

In an effort to educate the legislators a national organization, Equality and Justice for All, sent Dr. Laura Haynes from Los Angeles and Mr. David Pickup from Dallas to New Mexico at their own expense to testify.  Dr. Haynes’s expert testimony and Mr. David Pickup’s personal testimony were compelling but did not influence the finally tally.  Rebecca Frock from Albuquerque also testified against the bill as a local Christian therapist.

Amongst the legislators themselves, little opposition was presented.  The bill was carefully shepherded through committees with testimony allowed usually late in the evening.

This legislation is not about righting a wrong against the homosexual community.  It is about having a draconian homosexual ideology negate Christian worldview teachings.  The homosexual community has dominated the media and infiltrated schools.  Now it wants to invade the therapeutic relationship.

Please contact Governor Susana Martinez and ask her to disallow the invasion of privacy that this law represents and allow Christian counselors to do the job for which they have been trained.
